SGRAFFITO TILE

For this project I used a technique called sgraffito to create my design on a 4x4 clay slab. To add color to the surface, I applied 3 coats of under-glaze and the used a fine point needle tool and a small loop tool. Once I was done carving, my tile was bisqued in the kiln. After it was bisqued , I applied 3 coats of glaze and then my tile glazed-fired. There is rotational symmetry in my design and you can see it in how the sharks/whales swim around each other and the bubbles are in apposite corners, also the sharks are the same because the flowers in the same place.
I am really proud of how I sketched out the sharks/whales before and how the purple and blue go together. One challenge I faced during this process was carving around the flowers and carving out the bubbles but I overcame it by going slower only carving out one bubble. If I was going to create my tile again I would carve it before I put the under-glaze on because it would've been a little easier and It would probably look better. Through the process of creating my tile I learned that I should do under-glaze after carving and I should be patient with carving. I learned how to smooth a tile and how to scratch small things into clay I also learned how to do sgraffito.
COIL MUG
For this project I used a technique called coil building to create my design of a coil mug. To build my mug I made coils then scratched and attached them. After I attached all the coils I smoothed out the whole mug with a smooth rib tool. Once I was done coil building and smoothing it out, I applied 3 layers of red underglaze. Once I was done with the red underglaze, my mug was bisqued in the kiln. After it was bisqued , I applied 1 coat of black underglaze to the ladybugs and 3 coats of clear glaze. After I finished glazing my mug got glazed-fired. There is repetition in my design and you can see it in how the ladybugs are in a pattern around the mug and how each ladybug is the same.
I am really proud of how I did the underglaze and how well the ladybugs turned out. One challenge I faced during this process was smoothing out the mug but I overcame it by using different tools. If I was going to create my mug again I would start off with a pinch pot so it would've been more of a teacup. Through the process of creating my mug I learned that I should be patient and not use extremely wet clay. I learned how to create a mug out of coils and how to underglaze a ladybug.
SLAB BOX
For this project I used a technique called slab building to create my design on a slab box. To add color to the surface, I applied 3 coats of under-glaze, then used a rubber tool and smooth rib. Once I was done under-glazing, my box was bisqued in the kiln. After it was bisqued , I applied 3 coats of glaze and then my box was glazed-fired. There is additive texture in my design and you can see it in how the syrup drips down and the waffle is raised. There is movement in how the syrup drips around the box
I am really proud of how the syrup looks and how the berries look. One challenge I faced during this process was making the waffle raised but I overcame it by going slower and making longer coils. If I was going to create my box again I would make a very different design and look at the under-glaze colors first. Through the process of creating my box I learned that I should think over designs and I should be patient with carving. I learned how to bevel a tile and how to construct a box with 6 slabs.
Double Pinch Pot Sculpture
For this project I used a technique called emphasis to create my design on a double pinch pot. To build my sculpture I made 6 pinch pots then scratched and attached them with coils to make 3 spheres. After I attached all the coils I smoothed out the spheres with a smooth rib tool. Once I was done adding the faces and hats to my sculpture it was bisqued. After it was bisqued , I applied 3 coats under-glaze to the penguins and 3 coats of clear glaze. After I finished glazing my sculpture it was glazed-fired. There is emphasis in my design and you can see it in how the beaks are bright yellow, the hats and the heart on the back.
Over the time creating this project I learned how to make a sphere out of 2 pinch pots and how to be patient while working with clay. I successfully emphasized the back with a heart but the front has multiple emphasized parts such as the beaks and the hats. Incorporating emphasis in my sculpture makes it brighter and has more life to it. I think it enhanced my sculpture by making it more because if it didn't have the heart on the back it would be boring but it also wouldn't show its a family. I am very proud of how my sculpture turned out I think it's adorable and represents who the penguins are for. I am happy with how the under-glaze and glaze turned out I think it looks perfect and exactly how I wanted. If I was to make my sculpture again I would've been more careful with the under-glaze because i got the black all over and had to get it off without ruining it.
Serving Dish Project
For this project I used a technique called coil building to create my design on a slab. To build my serving dish I rolled out a slab of clay and cut out a wavy circle then scratched and attached coils to make walls for different sections. After I attached all the coils I smoothed out the sections with a sponge. Once I was done smoothing out my serving dish it was bisqued. After it was bisqued, I applied 3 coats under-glaze to every design and 3 coats of clear glaze. After I finished glazing my sculpture it was glazed-fired.
Over the time creating this project I learned how to draw things with undergalze and how tedious it actually is. My food dish is intended to be a snack plate/charcuterie plate, I chose to make this because I like to have different things at once and because sometimes my family has a charcuterie night for dinner. I do think my dish will work well for putting different little snacks. I am very proud of how my dish turned out I think it turned out so good. I am happy with how the under-glaze and glaze turned out but I do think it's a little blurry. If I was to make my dish again I would've been more careful with the under-glaze because in some places its a little light and messed up.
